New Committee for Classics and Mythology

In an exciting development, the Hellenic Preservation Society recently established a new committee focused on Greek Classics and Mythology. This initiative aims to enhance outreach and education within the Northeastern Ohio community. Through this committee, members will explore various ways in which Greek mythology and classical literature intersect with modern cultural experiences. The first significant contribution was made by Board Member Tom Wendland, who highlighted a unique bronze sculpture in the Cleveland Museum of Art, known as the Cleveland Apollo.

Engaging Community Events

The society encourages community involvement through various events and lectures. For instance, on January 23, 2025, the society will hold a Dr. Seth Pevnick lecture and HPS meeting. Such gatherings not only highlight important cultural themes but also foster a sense of unity among Hellenes living in Northeastern Ohio. Recently, HPS hosted Emmy-award-winning author Yvette Manessis Corporon, showcasing her inspiring work at Sts. Constantine and Helen Cathedral. This event exemplifies the society’s commitment to bringing inspiring voices to the community.

The Greek Cultural Garden

The Hellenic Preservation Society is also an active participant in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, a remarkable collection of gardens celebrating the diverse ethnic groups of the city. Each garden commemorates the rich heritage contributed by immigrants over the years. The Greek Cultural Garden stands out with its beautiful landscaping and historical significance, making it a vital part of Cleveland’s cultural tapestry.

Unique Collections and Historic Acquisitions

One of the society’s recent accomplishments includes the restoration of over 30 icons from the Annunciation Church in Cleveland, a project that began in 1992 and concluded in 1999. Additionally, a fascinating new acquisition from the GOYA Conference-Banquet held in 1961 has expanded their collection. These artifacts not only preserve history but also connect contemporary audiences with their heritage.
