Exploring the Garst Museum: A Treasure of Darke County History

The Garst Museum, located in Greenville, Ohio, is a vibrant historical museum dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of Darke County. With over 300,000 artifacts displayed in 35,000 square feet of exhibit space, the museum provides a unique glimpse into American history. It features six major exhibit venues and two minor ones, each presenting significant aspects of the region’s past.

Major Exhibit Venues and Highlights

One of the standout attractions within the museum is the National Annie Oakley Center. This exhibit highlights the adventurous personal and professional life of this iconic sharpshooter. Visitors will also be captivated by the “Crossroads of Destiny” display, which focuses on the Treaty of Greenville and the legendary figures of Anthony Wayne, Little Turtle, and Tecumseh. Another notable exhibit is dedicated to Lowell Thomas, known for his globetrotting media coverage, and his iconic collection related to Lawrence of Arabia.

The “Keepers of Freedom” exhibit pays tribute to Commander Zachary Lansdowne and the USS Shenandoah, as well as to Darke County veterans. This section aims to honor those who have served, showcasing their contributions and sacrifices throughout history.

The Village Wing presents an early Main Street experience and features the Kay Brown Photo Gallery. Meanwhile, the Americana Wing includes a Currier & Ives collection along with period American furnishings from the Christopher Collection. The Pioneer Wing highlights the Great Darke County Fair and showcases early agriculture and domestic equipment.
