Since its establishment in 1836, the Ashtabula Harbor has relied on the lighthouse to safely guide ships navigating the often treacherous waters of Lake Erie. The current lighthouse, built in 1905 from heavy steel plate, showcases architectural marvels reminiscent of old Great Lakes ore boats. Notably, the lighthouse was relocated in 1916, positioning it 2,500 feet north on the breakwater at the harbor’s entrance.

Remarkably, the Ashtabula Lighthouse was the last on Lake Erie to be managed by Lighthouse Keepers, maintaining its human touch until automation in 1973. This historical background renders the lighthouse an essential landmark of nautical heritage.

Restoration Efforts and Community Support

The Ashtabula Lighthouse & Restoration Society is dedicated to completing the restoration of this iconic structure. As spring unfolds, the society launches its 2024 Membership Campaign. They invite the public to financially support the ongoing maintenance and restoration efforts. Contributions are vital to ensuring the lighthouse remains a cherished part of local history.

Join Us for the Annual Christmas Party

Mark your calendars for the Ashtabula Lighthouse Restoration & Preservation Society’s Annual Christmas Party on Saturday, December 14, 2024. This festive event will be held at the Zaback Gathering Center, located at 500 West Prospect Rd, Ashtabula, OH, from 6 PM to 10 PM.

During the party, attendees can enjoy a delicious meal, with the main course, coffee, water, and soft drinks provided. Guests are encouraged to bring a dish to share and their preferred beverage. The evening will feature an exciting Ornament Game, where participants may bring a wrapped ornament valued at no more than $10.

Dinner will be served at 6:15 PM, followed by the Ornament Game at 8 PM. The fun continues with a Christmas Raffle after the game. Remember to bring your sold and unsold ticket stubs along with money. The event will conclude with a celebratory toast, ringing in the New Year with festive wishes!
