The Westerville Fire Fighters Memorial, also known as “The Crossing,” honors the past, present, and future firefighters who have bravely served their communities. Located at First Responders Park in Westerville, Ohio, this memorial serves as a heartfelt tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

A Tribute Born from Tragedy

The inspiration for the Westerville Fire Fighters Memorial came after a tragic event in 1998. During a house fire on a hometown volunteer duty, firefighter David Theisen lost his life at just twenty-nine years old. David was greatly loved and respected and had served with several fire departments, including Worthington, Crooksville, Plain Township, and Madison Township. In remembrance of David and in honor of all brave men and women in firefighting, a committee led by Tom Ullom, a firefighter/medic, designed the memorial to provide an inspirational space for reflection and remembrance.

The Design of the Memorial

The Westerville Fire Fighters Memorial features a stunning cast bronze sculpture that comprises two significant components. The centerpiece is a heroic portrait figure of David Theisen rendered in approximately 115% life size. He is depicted in his turnout gear, helmet under one arm, symbolizing his readiness to serve. This statue stands within a uniquely designed large bronze doorframe.

Viewing the memorial from the front, you encounter a smooth surface adorned with a low relief Greek pediment and akroter ornaments. These elements evoke the essence of ancient memorial stones or stelae, firmly establishing the site as a place of remembrance. Conversely, the back surface of the doorframe showcases a sculpted texture resembling clapboard siding, reminiscent of a typical residential doorway. This artistic touch enriches the storytelling aspect of the memorial.
