In 1901, Martha “Mattie” Helen Beal won the land lottery, which was key to shaping the Lawton area. Originally a young telephone operator from Wichita, Kansas, she chose a 160-acre tract near Lawton’s southern edge. Recognizing the potential for community development, Mattie divided her land into affordable lots, fostering growth in the area.

Community Contributions

As a philanthropist, Mattie made significant contributions to local education and recreation. She generously donated land for Lincoln School, a local church, and two city parks situated in the Beal Addition. These contributions helped lay the foundation for a vibrant community.

The Transformation of the Home

In 1923, the Paynes undertook a significant renovation, simplifying the home’s exterior elements and updating it to an Art Deco style. They enjoyed nearly three decades of residence in this beautiful home. After their departure, the Historic Mattie Beal Home changed hands several times until the Lawton Heritage Association acquired it in 1974.

The Restoration Efforts

The Lawton Heritage Association played a crucial role in preserving this historic structure. With financial support from the McMahon Foundation, the City of Lawton, State and Federal agencies, and local civic groups, they saved the home from demolition. The association completed extensive renovations between 2003 and 2005, ensuring that this gem of Lawton’s history is preserved for future generations.
