Founding Albany

For $400, the Monteith brothers purchased 320 acres of land from Hiram Smead. This strategic acquisition laid the groundwork for what would become the town of Albany, named after Albany, New York, the capital of their birth state. The brothers constructed their home straddling the boundary of their claims, adhering to the land ownership requirements of the time. This innovative approach resulted in one of the first framed homes built with sawed lumber in Oregon.

Legacy and Growth

The Monteith House was completed in 1849, just as California’s Gold Rush began to capture the attention of many. The success of the brothers in the goldfields allowed them to invest in multiple business ventures. Their efforts significantly contributed to establishing Albany as the Hub of the Willamette Valley.
