The Slate Belt Heritage Center, located in Bangor, Pennsylvania, is a remarkable museum dedicated to preserving the rich history of the Slate Belt. Established in 2000, this center was born from the determination of local citizens to save a historic building that originally served as the town hall, council chambers, borough offices, and fire department since its construction in 1907.

A Historical Gem

The journey to restore the Slate Belt Heritage Center began in 1998 when a group of community residents recognized the architectural and historical value of the deteriorating structure. In February 1999, they proposed to the Bangor Town Council the leasing of this building. With the council’s approval, volunteers rallied to refurbish the center, ensuring to maintain its historical integrity. The renovations spanned from restoring the beautiful hardwood floors to re-establishing the tower that houses the old town clock.

Captivating Exhibits and Art

One of the most notable features of the museum is a stunning mural located on the staircase wall. This mural, created by art students from Bangor High School, illustrates the history of Bangor from its inception through the end of the 20th century. It serves as a vibrant tribute to the town’s rich heritage and the community’s collective memory.

Visiting Information

The center welcomes visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. from April through October. During the winter months from November to March, the center maintains the same Sunday schedule, with operations dependent on holidays and weather conditions.
