History of Delaware Valley College

The roots of Delaware Valley College can be traced back to 1894. Joseph Krauskopf, an activist rabbi and advocate for social justice, established the National Farm School after a life-changing encounter with literary giant Leo Tolstoy. Tolstoy encouraged Krauskopf to lead people from congested cities to fertile lands. Two years later, Krauskopf purchased a 100-acre farm in Doylestown and inaugurated a small classroom for six students.

The National Farm School offered a unique three-year program that integrated practical farming experience with academic learning. Although initially aimed at young Jewish men, Krauskopf ensured that all boys, regardless of their background, could enroll. This inclusive approach set a precedent for the personalized education that continues to define Delaware Valley College today.

Growth and Evolution

Under the leadership of Dr. James Work in the postwar years, the institution expanded its curriculum. New programs emerged in food industry, biology, chemistry, and business administration. In 1948, the National Farm School was renamed the National Agricultural College. Eventually, in 1992, with a generous donation from Mrs. Edythe Roth, the Roth Living Farm Museum was established as part of the college’s commitment to agricultural education.
