History and Dedication

The Arboretum was formally dedicated on April 23, 2003, during a community ceremony. This special event coincided with the Harborcreek Bicentennial Celebration, marking a significant milestone for the college. The dedication was a culmination of efforts from the Penn State Behrend faculty and staff to recognize and enhance the beautiful land entrusted to the college by Mary Behrend. Today, the college spans 854 acres, which includes an extraordinary mix of native and exotic trees.

Accolades and Memberships

In 2003, Penn State Behrend was welcomed into the American Public Gardens Association. This membership recognized the college’s status as an official arboretum. It paved the way for developing various public education programs, outreach initiatives, and research projects centered on the arboretum’s impressive tree collection. One significant achievement came in 2017 when Penn State Behrend received the Tree Campus USA designation from the Arbor Day Foundation. This honor is awarded to universities that demonstrate excellence in tree care and management. It is worth noting that Penn State Behrend is one of only 20 institutions in Pennsylvania to achieve this recognition, marking the fourth time the college has been listed as a Tree Campus.
