Visiting the Historic Harris-Cameron Mansion

The crown jewel of the Historical Society is the Harris-Cameron Mansion, a stunning 19th-century Victorian home. Guided tours are available Tuesday through Friday, at 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00 p.m., as well as on the second Sunday of each month. Visitors begin at the Society’s office, from where experienced docents lead them through the picturesque east garden to the mansion’s entrance. The tour provides an opportunity to step back in time, as the mansion remains largely unchanged since Cameron’s family inhabited it from 1863 to 1941.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Inside the mansion, guests will encounter Cameron’s personal office, adorned with original furnishings. The large Victorian parlor is a highlight, featuring celebrated French mirrors that reflect the elegance of the era. Visitors can also explore the sunlit solarium, decorated with exquisite French wallpapers. Additional rooms showcase Colonial and Victorian furnishings, culminating in a spectacular Art Deco bathroom added in 1929 by the mansion’s last owner.

Public Programs and Library Access

The Historical Society offers public programs monthly, specifically on the second Sunday at 2:30 p.m. These programs provide engaging opportunities for learning and discovery. One of the main exhibits currently on display is “The Presidency and Dauphin County,” which delves into the local impact of presidential history.

The Alexander Research Library is another valuable resource, open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Members enjoy free access to this extensive library, steeped in local heritage.
