The Revival of Stahl’s Pottery

The story of Stahl’s Pottery began with their father, Charles Stahl, who cultivated pottery skills in the late nineteenth century. Thomas and Isaac revived their father’s trade in 1934, producing utilitarian and decorative redware pottery until 1956. The redware, known for its distinctive hue from local clay, became a signature of their craftsmanship.

The Iconic Wood-Fired Kiln

At the heart of the museum is the round, bee-hive, wood-fired kiln, a remarkable structure originally built in 1933. This kiln played a critical role in the production process for the Stahl brothers. It represents not only their dedication to the craft but also the historical significance of rural arts and crafts in America.

A Family of Artists

The legacy of Stahl’s Pottery is carried on by family members. Thomas’ daughter, Carrie (Stahl) Schultz, contributed her artistic touch by decorating many of the sgraffito plates produced by Thomas and Isaac. Meanwhile, Russell Stahl apprenticed under his father, Isaac, and took over the kiln operations after Isaac’s tenure. He fired the kiln for the last time in 1956, marking the end of an era.
