Mifflinburg Buggy Museum: A Celebration of Heritage
Welcome to the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum, where the rich history of buggy making comes alive. Situated in the picturesque Susquehanna River Valley of Pennsylvania, this captivating museum honors the legacy of the region’s craftsmanship and the story of the Heiss family, one of the key figures in Mifflinburg’s buggy-making heritage.
Our History
The museum’s foundation can be traced back to an inspiring gathering in May 1978. A group led by Dr. Charles McCool Snyder, a retired history professor, recognized the importance of preserving the town’s unique heritage. During this pivotal meeting, Norman Heiss, son of a renowned buggy maker, introduced the idea of showcasing a buggy factory. This exchange ultimately paved the way for the establishment of the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum.
The Heiss Family and Buggy Town
The Heiss family’s connection to the buggy-making industry dates back to the mid-19th century. In 1848, Peter Heiss, a minister, and Catherine Williams began their journey through various counties in Pennsylvania before finally settling on a farm in Union County. The craftsmanship of the Heiss family played a pivotal role in establishing Mifflinburg as “Buggy Town,” a place synonymous with elegant and durable buggies.
