A Brief History of Mount Lebanon

Mount Lebanon is rich in history, stretching over six square miles of Western Pennsylvania’s picturesque hills. The area was once contested land, where significant surveys occurred as far back as May 25, 1770. Notably, James McFarlane’s “Black Oak Hill” laid the foundation for what would become Mount Lebanon. A patent for McFarlane’s land was finally obtained on November 27, 1788, after complex territorial disputes with Virginia.

Transformative Exhibitions

One of the museum’s current highlights is the exhibit titled “The Many Lives of This Old House: From Home To Office To History Center.” This exhibit showcases the fascinating transformation of the museum’s building over the past 90 years. Originally, it served as a warm residence for four families, eventually repurposed into an office space for the Mt. Lebanon Tax Office and the South Hills Area Council of Governments (SHACOG). Today, it stands proudly as the History Center, a repository of local history and community stories.
