Operating Exhibits and Unique Displays

At Rough and Tumble, guests can witness many operating exhibits, prominently featuring an incredible collection of steam traction engines. One of the highlights is the Schiedler engine, built in 1886, which is regarded as one of the oldest running steam traction engines in the United States. Recently restored, this iconic piece of machinery can be seen in action, showcasing the engineering prowess of the past. Visitors should also take advantage of the two special steam trains that run on loops around the museum grounds.

The museum boasts an extensive array of gas engines as well. Among them is the oldest internal combustion engine still operating in North America, built by Otto and Langen in 1867, alongside the oldest running diesel engine created by M.A.N. Additionally, the museum features a large building containing stationary steam engines, all fully operational.

A Treasure Trove of Agriculture and Engineering

Throughout the museum, visitors can marvel at some of the finest restored tractors, including renowned brands like John Deere, International Harvester, and Rumely. The model shops house numerous unique handmade items, capturing the artistry and craftsmanship of earlier times. The blacksmiths on site engage in traditional forging, providing a captivating demonstration of a time-honored trade.

Upcoming Events and Special Opportunities

Rough and Tumble is also known for its exciting events. The annual Threshermen’s Reunion, recognized as the second oldest show in the country, will celebrate its 77th year from August 13th to 16th, 2025. This event attracts thousands of visitors and features an impressive assembly of construction equipment and much more.
