Minnilusa Historical Association: Discover 3 Billion Years of History in Rapid City

Located in Rapid City, the Minnilusa Historical Association offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore three billion years of history. This captivating museum connects guests with the diverse cultures, people, and scientific wonders of the ancient Black Hills and the prairies of Western South Dakota. It’s a journey filled with rich stories and traditions, from prehistoric encounters and Native American heritage to pioneer narratives and the era of spaceflight.

A Family-Friendly Experience

At the Minnilusa Historical Association, families will delight in a vast array of cultural artifacts and interactive experiences. Each member of the family can engage with the stories that shaped this unique and beautiful region, often referred to by Lakotas as the “Island in the Plains.” The museum is dedicated to creating connections that enhance understanding of this diverse cultural landscape.

Youth Programs

One of the standout offerings at the museum is the Forces of Flight program. Designed specifically for youth, this initiative introduces children to the exciting world of aviation. Participants delve into activities that illuminate the four forces of flight: lift, weight, thrust, and drag. This program takes place during early release Fridays throughout the school year and offers a fun, educational experience for young explorers.

New Exhibitions and Events

The Minnilusa Historical Association continually enriches its offerings with new exhibitions. A notable upcoming highlight is the work of Cynthia Thomas, an enrolled member of the Oneida Nation. Her exhibition opens in the Sioux Indian Museum Gallery on September 15th, 2024, and runs through January 19th, 2025. Thomas, who holds degrees in Art and Secondary Education, draws inspiration from her culture and has earned multiple awards for her compelling artwork.

Additionally, the museum will host STEAM Saturdays for youth ages 6 to 13, starting this fall. This program will provide hands-on learning opportunities related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. These engaging sessions are free for museum members and included with admission for non-members.

Upcoming Highlights

Another exciting addition is the exhibition titled Where Eagles Soar: The Story of Billy Mills Told Through the Artwork of SD Nelson, which will be available from October 11th, 2024, to May 18th, 2025. This presentation will explore the legendary journey of Billy Mills, a Lakota Olympic Gold Medalist, through the captivating artistry of SD Nelson.
