A Historic Building with a Fascinating Past
The museum is housed in the historic Faulk-Gauntt Building, a structure with its own intriguing story. Originally, the site was home to the law offices of prominent figures Senator J. J. Faulk and Judge W. L. Faulk. In the early 1890s, the building was purchased by J. R. Gauntt, a local businessman and descendent of pioneer settlers. Gauntt operated a mercantile store called the Chany Tree and later started a monument business. The two-story brick building, which was constructed in 1896, became a hub of commercial activity due to its proximity to the rail lines that were vital for trade during Athens’ early days.
