Welcome to the Heritage Society of Washington County, home to the historic Giddings Stone Mansion, located in Brenham, Texas. This museum offers a unique glimpse into the 19th century, showcasing beautiful architecture and rich family history.
A Masterpiece of Architecture
The Giddings Stone Mansion is a stunning example of Greek Revival architecture. It comprises eleven rooms and two expansive galleries that run the length of the house on both the upper and lower levels. Visitors are greeted by the mansion’s striking exterior, which features massive Doric columns and wide verandas that invite relaxation and admiration.
Historical Significance
The mansion’s history dates back to the aftermath of a yellow fever epidemic in 1868. Concerned for the well-being of his family, J.D. Giddings purchased a 320-acre plot of land, strategically located on the highest hill in Washington County, just one mile south of Brenham. The construction of this magnificent home commenced in 1869 and was completed in 1870, where the Giddings family took residence.
Tragically, J.D. Giddings passed away on the property in 1878. His wife, Ann, continued to live in the mansion until her death. They had eight children, but only three survived to adulthood. Their only daughter, Mary Louise Giddings, married Heber Stone in 1879. This couple lived in the Giddings family home for their entire married life, along with some descendants for three generations.
