Located in the heart of Gatesville, Texas, the Gatesville Chamber of Commerce Foundation serves as a museum that encapsulates the rich history of the region. History of the Cotton Belt Depot

The Cotton Belt Route was announced in 1883, bringing a new era of commerce to Gatesville. The completion of this railroad line ultimately connected Cairo, Illinois to Gatesville, Texas, marking it as the “End of the Line.” By 1910, as the depot was constructed, the route expanded further to St. Louis, Missouri, solidifying the role of Gatesville as a critical transportation hub.

This depot became the heart of commercial activity in Gatesville and Coryell County. For decades, it facilitated the arrival and departure of goods, boosting local businesses and stimulating the economy. Unfortunately, by 1972, the declining need for rail service led to the depot’s closure, leaving a significant void in the community.

Restoration and Community Involvement

Recognizing the importance of the Cotton Belt Depot, a group of dedicated residents and local businesses initiated a restoration project ten years later. Their efforts culminated in December 1983, when the depot was transformed into the offices of the Gatesville Chamber of Commerce. This restoration was not just about saving a building; it was about preserving a vital piece of Gatesville’s history.

Approximately 500 individuals and numerous businesses contributed time, resources, or materials to this project. The restored depot now stands as a symbol of resilience and community pride, connecting generations to their past. Donald and Jo Cox, who played instrumental roles in the restoration, expressed hope that the depot would remind future residents of their rich heritage.

Community Engagement and Events

The Gatesville Chamber of Commerce continues to foster community engagement through various events. From “Business of the Month” recognitions to ribbon-cutting ceremonies for new members, the Chamber is a thriving hub of local activity. Market Days are particularly popular, bringing together vendors and residents in a festive atmosphere.
