Gadsby’s Tavern was originally built in 1785, showcasing the elegant Georgian architectural style. In 1792, a larger Federal style hotel was constructed, further enhancing the venue’s capacity. The tavern is named after John Gadsby, who operated it from 1796 to 1808. During his management, he hosted many noteworthy figures, including prominent statesmen and revolutionary leaders. The establishment served as a meeting point for discussions that shaped America’s future.
Our Mission
The Gadsby’s Tavern Museum Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization comprised entirely of dedicated volunteers. Our mission is to preserve the rich history of Gadsby’s Tavern while raising funds for its ongoing enhancement and interpretation. We also promote various educational and cultural outreach programs. These efforts contribute to keeping the spirit of the Tavern alive, organizing events for locals and visitors alike.
