A Legacy of History

Completed in 1805, Woodlawn was built on land gifted to Eleanor Parke Custis and Lawrence Lewis by none other than George Washington. As a functioning plantation, Woodlawn was home to the enslavement of over ninety men, women, and children of African descent. The historical significance of this site deepened in the 1840s when it was sold to Quakers, who transformed it into a free labor colony in the critical years leading up to the Civil War.

In the early 20th century, the estate underwent modernization. Then, in the 1950s, Woodlawn became the first public site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, making it accessible for future generations to learn about its legacy.

The Pope-Leighey House

Adjacent to Woodlawn, visitors can also explore the Pope-Leighey House, designed by the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Built in the 1940s, this home was originally located in Falls Church, Virginia. Its journey continued when Marjorie Leighey saved the house from demolition in the 1960s by relocating it to Woodlawn. Today, it stands as the only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home open to the public in the D.C. area.
