Historical Significance of the Tolt Area
The Tolt River region has a deep-rooted history that spans approximately 10,000 years. The area was originally inhabited by the Snoqualmie Indians, who referred to it as “Tolthue,” meaning “river of swift waters.” The first recorded mention of Tolt appeared on the Survey General’s Map of Washington Territory in 1857 as “Tolthue River.” This historical context enriches the Tolt Historical Society’s mission of preserving the local heritage.
A notable figure in the area’s history is Chief Patkanim, the head signer of the Point Elliott Treaty in 1855. This treaty ceded Snoqualmie Indian land to the United States in exchange for a reservation, officially established in 2000. The original site of Tolt was also the administrative center for the Snoqualmie Indians, who built cedar plank houses along the banks where the Snoqualmie River meets the Tolt River.
Engagement and Support
The Tolt Historical Society encourages community involvement and maintains a secure portal for donations and membership payments via credit card. This feature makes it easy for anyone to support the preservation and sharing of local history.
