Discovering the McChord Air Museum: A Tribute to Aviation History

The McChord Air Museum, located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) in McChord Field, Washington, stands as a testament to the rich history of military aviation. Established in 1982 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the museum aims to preserve, restore, and maintain the legacy of McChord Field and its contributions to aviation. After a lengthy hiatus, the museum reopened its doors on February 22, 2022, making it accessible to non-military visitors once again.

A New Era of Accessibility

Beginning April 1, 2016, a significant change took effect regarding visitor access to McChord Field. Visitors can no longer use standard Washington State Driver Licenses or ID Cards to obtain a visitor’s pass. For current access requirements, potential visitors are encouraged to consult the “Visitation Information” section under the “Your Visit” tab of the museum’s website. This change reflects the museum’s commitment to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.

Supporting the Museum’s Mission

The McChord Air Museum features a diverse collection of artifacts and exhibits that highlight the history of McChord Air Force Base. One essential aspect of the museum is the Tower Gift & Hobby Store. All sales and proceeds from this store directly contribute to the museum’s mission by funding preservation and restoration initiatives. Visitors can take home unique souvenirs while supporting the museum’s educational and historical endeavors.

Honoring Personal Histories

Personal stories enrich the fabric of the museum. Longtime member Chuck Bowen’s retirement drew reflections from his son, Gary Bowen, on their family’s connection to the Air Force and the museum. Chuck’s notable quest was to bring a C-124 aircraft to the display, symbolizing the dedication to honoring both personal and collective histories within military aviation.
