Acknowledging Indigenous Heritage

Before European settlers arrived, the land that is now Kent was inhabited by the First People of the Salish Seas. Tribes such as the dxdewabS (Duwamish – the Inside People), the sUupabS (Green River People), and the spalkoabS (White River People) contributed deeply to this region’s history. The Greater Kent Historical Society acknowledges their significant contributions, along with the impact of displacement caused by settlers. In the spirit of truth and reconciliation, the society embraces the stories, teachings, and place names that reflect this rich heritage.

Art and Community Engagement

One of the highlights of the museum is the Welcome Figure, carved by Mike Evans, Waq́usqidəb, the Honorable Chair of the Snohomish Tribe of Indians. This magnificent piece was permanently installed on the museum grounds following a special dedication event on April 19, 2023. The Welcome Figure serves as a symbol of respect and recognition of the area’s Indigenous history.

Mike Evans actively engages with the community by carving at the museum every Friday from 1 PM to 3 PM. Visitors have the unique opportunity to witness his artistry and learn more about the cultural significance of his work.
