Exploring the Swedish American Historical Society of Wisconsin
The Swedish American Historical Society of Wisconsin (SAHSWI) is a vital cultural institution located in Fox Point, United States. It serves as a treasure trove of Swedish heritage, showcasing the rich history and contributions of Swedish immigrants to Wisconsin. The society facilitates various community events and celebrations to honor this heritage, including the upcoming Santa Lucia celebration in December 2024.
Santa Lucia Celebration 2024
The 2024 Santa Lucia celebration is scheduled for December 8, 2024, at Fox Point Lutheran Church from 2 to 4 PM. This festive event features a beautiful Lucia program performed by children and young adults. Under the guidance of director Stina Lemery, with assistance from Amanda Balistreri and music by pianist Matt Byszynski, attendees can expect an engaging presentation. The celebration emphasizes themes of light and joy during the dark winter months.
During the event, the story of Lucia, adorned in candles and a traditional white gown, will come alive through her procession accompanied by “tärnor” (attendants), “stjärngossar” (starboys), “pepparkaksgubbar” (gingerbread men), and “tomtenissar” (elves). Participants will also enjoy traditional dancing around the Christmas tree, along with coffee, juice, and sweets. This year, the organization requests attendees to refrain from bringing additional dishes to share, ensuring a focused and cohesive experience.
Wisconsin Heritage and Events
The SAHSWI collaborates with the Vasa Order of America, Linde Lodge, at the Holiday Folk Fair International, where they represent Swedish culture. This event will take place at Milwaukee State Fair Park, starting on November 22. The theme for this year’s Folk Fair is “Celebrate the Culture of Traditional Art,” emphasizing the importance of traditional expression through various art forms.
Engagement and Community Connection
Another significant figure associated with SAHSWI is Harry H. Anderson, recognized as one of the founding fathers of the society. His dedication has led to various programs focused on preserving and promoting Swedish immigration stories within Wisconsin. The society also hosts activities like Swedish Genealogy Research and Fika, making it a hub for community learning and engagement.
Recognitions and Resources
The society proudly holds a Wisconsin State Historical Marker, which reflects its enduring dedication to preserving Swedish-American history. They conduct dedication and unveiling ceremonies to honor milestones in Wisconsin’s cultural narrative.
For those interested in staying connected, the SAHSWI offers newsletters and email subscriptions to keep the community informed about upcoming events like the Scandinavian Midsommar celebration in 2024, ensuring that the cultural legacy continues to thrive.
