History of the Museum Building

The South Wood County Historical Museum is steeped in history, situated on the site of Isaac Witter’s boyhood home. In 1907, Anton Billmeyer constructed the elegant Shadowlawn for Isaac Witter. This neoclassical style house features 23 rooms, excluding the expansive halls, and boasts modern amenities such as a central vacuum system. An elevator was even added later due to Isaac’s health concerns.

In 1947, the property transitioned into a community asset when George W. Mead, Isaac’s brother-in-law, purchased the home and land for $15,000. He subsequently gifted it to the city for the establishment of the T.B. Scott Public Library, which opened its doors in 1948. Following the opening of the McMillan Memorial Library in 1970, the building and the surrounding grounds were handed over to the South Wood County Historical Corporation. The museum officially opened its doors to the public in 1972, preserving the local history for future generations.
